Commission provides hope for North East Jobs - Hall

12.00.00am GMT Thu 28th Jan 2010

North East MEP Fiona Hall has welcomed as a "ray of hope" the European Commission's decision to open an antitrust investigation into a joint venture proposed by iron ore producers BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto.

Ms Hall said:

"Corus Teesside Cast Products is already on the verge of being mothballed, with 1700 jobs at stake.

"The BHP-Rio Tinto deal would send steel prices soaring and provide the final nail in the coffin for jobs in the steel sector.

"North East jobs rely on a steel market that is free, fair and functioning.

"We now look to the European Commission to ensure that happens."
