NORTH EAST MEP CALLS FOR EUROPEAN YEAR OF COMBATING VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

A North East MEP is supporting moves in the European Parliament to designate a year focused on combating violence against women. Liberal Democrat MEP Fiona Hall says the level of violence against women is simply unacceptable.

Small businesses encouraged to consider exporting

The FSB in the North East is encouraging all small businesses in the North East to consider exporting as a route out of the downturn. A report published by the European Commission on 5 July 2010 has found that approximately 25% of small businesses export or have exported in the past three years. The benefits of exporting, the report shows, include greater job creation and increased innovation within small businesses.

EURO-MPS AXE ILLEGAL TIMBER TRADE

MEPs have taken an axe to the illegal logging trade this week by banning the sale of illegal timber in Europe and setting up strict penalties for rogue traders.

NO CLONED MEAT ON EU-MENU

MEPs have rejected proposals by the EU Commission to allow food from cloned animals and their offspring onto the European market. North East Liberal Democrat MEP Fiona Hall is among a majority of MEPs calling for a ban on imported food and semen from cloned animals.

MEPS SECURE SAFEGUARDS IN SWIFT BANK DATA SHARING DEAL

North East MEP Fiona Hall has welcomed this week's vote in the European Parliament to approve a revised EU-US agreement on access to European banking data ('SWIFT' agreement) to help track terrorist financing.
